American Indians and Alaska Natives are diagnosed with diabetes at a higher rate than any other racial or ethnic group in the United States. It’s time to take charge of our health and start reducing those numbers!
Diabetes is a disease that occurs when our blood sugar is too high. Diabetes can have damaging effects on several parts of our body, but the good news is that there are ways to prevent them. If you already have diabetes, the first step to take is managing the condition. This can be done by monitoring your blood sugar levels throughout the day, keeping an eye on your blood pressure, and getting your cholesterol levels checked. A few other ways to take charge of your health include:
- Get active; whether it is by walking, running, zumba, or lifting weights, movement is movement!
- Plan healthy meals. Get your family involved, look up healthy, tasty meals on the internet, and learn new recipes.
- Take your medications as prescribed, on time, and at the correct dosage. If you are having trouble, talk with your doctor.
- Take care of you! Learn ways to cope with feelings of stress, and lean on your support system! Your mental health is just as important as your physical health.
Diabetes does not define who you are. You are in charge; take a hold of your health. Think about your future and the life you want to live. Start spreading awareness about diabetes; having the knowledge, tools, and best available medicines is important not only for yourself, but for others who may be living with diabetes or have a loved one with diabetes.
Start taking charge of your health today! Your life and your health are valuable.
