Summer Safety

As you dig into all the wonderful fun of summer these next few months, we’re sharing a few tips to make sure it is both memorable, yet safe. Read on for steps to protect yourself from the dangers of heat and the other safety hazards summer can bring!

The first thing to note is that hydration is key within these high-temperature days. Sip plenty of water while exercising and anytime you’re sweating, either from working, chasing around the kids or even sunbathing.

It doesn’t matter how long–or short–you’ve been outside: heat exhaustion can spark at any time. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include sweating, feeling weak or flushed, or beginning to vomit. If this happens to you, do not panic! Rest in a shaded area and drink a cool beverage (many sports drinks provide great electrolytes). If your symptoms don’t improve, seek medical advice. Watch carefully for symptoms of heat stroke, which include confusion, fainting, or, in some cases, seizures. If you suspect heat stroke, dial 911 immediately.

Symptoms of too much sun aren’t the only thing to be aware of during the summer. Pools, pests and man-made inventions have their own risks, too.

Do not leave young children unattended while swimming. Be sure that non-swimmers have life jackets equipped for their height and weight and watch them carefully, even if there are lifeguards present. As for pests: mosquitoes can cause a number of illnesses, including West Nile Virus. Learn what you can do to protect yourself at work and play.

When it comes to fireworks, it’s recommended to not use any at home. Enjoy the displays at professional festivals put on by your community. However, if consumer fireworks are legal where you live, and you choose to use them, be sure to only have sober adults light them outside at a safe distance from spectators. Keep a bucket of water nearby to fully extinguish fireworks that do not go off, just in case. Eye and ear protection are also a great idea.
