National Dental Care Awareness Month: Are You Doing All You Can to Protect Your Teeth?

Before you continue reading this article, take a second and look in the mirror. Sure, you’re seeing a friendly face and puzzled look wondering why we asked you to do so, but what about your teeth? Let’s see a smile.

May is National Dental Care Awareness Month, and if examining your pearly whites causes some concern, we have a few tips and tricks to turn that frown upside down.

We learn at a young age that brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day is a sure way to prevent cavities and infection. What’s common as we age is to ignore routine dentist visits and splurge on the sugary snacks we hide from the kids in the cupboard.

Note that these routine visits, in conjunction with brushing and flossing your teeth, are vital for the health of your oral hygiene! In addition to these tips, ensure you are also:

  • Utilizing mouthwash: Very few people use mouthwash frequently enough. It’s important to do so as it can significantly protect your teeth in the areas that cannot be reached through brushing or flossing.
  • Using fluoride treatments: Fluoride is tooth enamel’s best friend as it helps fight against bacteria attaching to enamel. An easy way to make sure you’re reaping the benefits of this is by getting a fluoride-based toothpaste and mouthwash.
  • Avoiding harmful food and drinks:  Tooth decay can be attributed to a poor diet. Consuming foods high in sugar can deteriorate your teeth. We’re not saying to give up the sweet stuff though, but rather enjoy it in moderation and be proactive in extra dental care after consumption!

Taking all these measures is a great start in participating in National Dental Care Awareness Month. But be sure to use these tips and tricks all the time! Practicing good oral hygiene and making dentist visits a priority will make your smile sparkle for years to come.

Happy brushing!
