Nowadays it seems the summers get shorter and shorter; it’s almost that time of the year again when school is back in session! Some kids may feel nervous or a little scared for the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and maybe even a new school. There are several ways you can help make it an exciting time and ease the anxieties that may arrive.
- Establish health habits. Prepare healthy lunches and snacks and find physical activities they enjoy.
- Take time to talk. Talk about the nervousness and their fears. Let them know it’s okay. Teach them how to breathe through it to help calm their nerves.
- Re-establish the routine. Get back into a routine. It could include homework, playtime, brushing teeth, reading a book, and going to bed early.
- Talk about safety. Review indoor/outdoor safety rules. Talk to them about the importance of having a trusted adult to talk to in times of uncertainty or fear.
- Limit screen time. This can be a tip for the whole family! An hour or two before bedtime, take time to unplug.
- Celebrate the start of a new school year. Take pictures, prepare a new outfit or shoes to wear, and be excited about what the new year will bring!
We want our children to be excited about school and learning new things. Let’s do what we can to show our support and cheer them on as they embark on the new school year adventure!
